The three basic types of autopilots are tiller pilots, wheel pilots, and deluxe units. Considerable differences exist between the three styles, as they vary greatly in terms of price, how they are operated, and level of sophistication. Simrad is our recommended brand for autopilots.
Simrad offers three different models of tiller pilots. The TP10 is designed for sail boats up to 33 feet in length and up to 8,140 lbs. With a peak thrust of 143 lbs. and a lock-to-lock speed of eight seconds, this autopilot outperforms all competing tiller pilots in its class. The TP22 and the TP32 models, designed for boats up to 39 feet in length and up to 14,000 lbs., can be integrated with a SimNet data network for automatic steering against the wind. When connected to a GPS system, these models automatically head towards a desired location.
The Simrad WP32 is a wheel pilot designed for sailing yachts up to 39 feet long and up to 18,700 lbs. Similar to the aforementioned tiller pilots, the WP32 can be connected to a SimNet data network for smart steering. Helpful features include Autotack to steer through a tack at the push of a button, Steer to Compass to head in a specific direction, Steer to GPS to automatically head to a specific location, and many others. Some features do require additional accessories, such as a GPS system.
Simrad also manufactures a line of deluxe autopilots for boats of all sizes, including the AP21, AP25, and AP27. Beyond just sailboats, the AP series is also used with luxury yachts and other power boats. With a deluxe unit, the driver has complete control over all directional functions with a single hand-held device.
